A Mother - Not A Politician.

I’m running for State Representative to fight for the City of Champions. But I can’t do it alone.

I came to America at 12 years old and Brockton welcomed me with open arms. I’m proud to run a business and raise my family here in the City of Champions. As your State Representative, I’ll fight for better schools, safer streets, and help for local businesses.

Rita Mendes is an attorney and real estate agent raising her two children here in Brockton. At 12 years old, she immigrated to the United States from Brazil, not speaking any English. After briefly living in Weymouth, Rita moved to Brockton and has called it home ever since.

Rita’s mother had to work two, and sometimes three, jobs to support their family. The programs offered by the Brockton Public Schools helped Rita become the first person in her family to graduate high school. She then worked her way through Massasoit Community College, UMass Dartmouth, and eventually earned a law degree from New England Law School.

These achievements were only possible because of the foundation Rita received in the Brockton Public Schools, with teachers who were committed to their students’ success. Rita became involved in public service to make sure everyone in Brockton had the same opportunities she did. As a mother, she wants to ensure that all Brockton students receive the same educational opportunities she did.

In 2019, Rita was elected to the Brockton City Council and is the city’s first Brazilian-American elected official. On the City Council, she has focused on getting smaller sizes in our public schools, using federal funds to improve Brockton’s bridges and roads, and supporting small businesses.

As a business owner, Rita has experienced how political “red tape” makes it harder to start and run a business. She has worked to streamline this experience so more people open a business here in Brockton. If elected State Representative, Rita will continue to work on these issues and others, such as increased traffic patrols to reverse the recent increases in fatal car accidents.
